What are carrier overage charges?
Carrier overage charges are additional fees that UPS submits after a shipped supply kit or box has been delivered.
- These charges are usually invoiced by UPS and applied to your Dorm Room Movers account 2–3 weeks after delivery.
Redirect / address change charges
If UPS has to change the shipping address on a package, usually at the customer’s request, they bill an additional fee:
- Redirect / address change charges typically post 2–3 weeks after the package is delivered, when UPS sends us the invoice.
- These fees are generally around $30 per adjusted box.
UPS overages
UPS audits the weight and dimensions of each shipment against what was originally provided on the shipping label.
- They use the greater of:
- The actual weight of the package, or
- The dimensional weight, which is a calculation based on the size of the package.
Depending on the entered and audited dimensions, either actual or dimensional weight may be used for both the quoted rate and the final rate.
For more details on dimensional weight, you can review UPS’s official explanation.
What information do we receive from UPS?
In these audit situations:
- The only data provided to Dorm Room Movers is:
- The audited weight and/or dimensions reported by UPS, and
- The resulting additional charges.
We do not receive a deeper breakdown from UPS and, unfortunately, we are not able to dispute these charges or request additional information from the carrier.
How to help avoid carrier overage charges
When purchasing a shipping label, we strongly recommend:
- Using a scale to accurately weigh your packed box.
- Using a tape measure to enter the correct length, width, and height.
Providing accurate information at the time you create the label reduces the chance that UPS will adjust your shipment and apply overage charges later.
