Overview
Shipping after storage is designed for situations where items cannot be delivered back to campus.
Common scenarios include students who:
- Are not returning to the same school
- Are transferring to another institution
- Live more than 10 miles from the pickup campus
A ship-out request should be submitted at least 2 weeks before items are needed—about one week for warehouse processing and one week for UPS transit.
An automated email is sent when boxes are processed for UPS pickup and again when they are processed for delivery, so shipment status is clear.
NOTE: Default shipping insurance is $200 per box, with additional coverage available through UPS Capital.
Costs, packing requirements, and items that cannot be shipped
Billing and estimates:
- Estimated cost per box includes:
- UPS freight
- $55 warehousing fee
- $19.99 per-box handling fee
- The estimate is based on the Dorm Room Movers signature box size and rated weight.
- When other box sizes are used, the final carrier cost may vary.
- All fees are charged to the card on file once boxes are pulled and prepared for shipping.
Packing and box quality:
- Items are expected to be packed into boxes before movers arrive at the original pickup.
- Poorly packed, overloaded, or low-quality boxes may need to be repacked into ship-worthy cartons at $35 per box.
- Non-boxed items that require boxing before shipping incur a $35 per box packing fee; specialty box sizes may not always be available.
Electronics and restricted items:
- Computers and similar electronics are not covered if shipped without original manufacturer shipping materials.
- Televisions require a waiver form on file prior to shipping.
- Items that exceed UPS size or weight guidelines will not be shipped.
- Most furniture cannot be shipped through this service.
Options for items that cannot be shipped:
- Delivery back to campus on included dates
- Continued storage for as long as needed
- Pickup from the warehouse, scheduled directly in the online account (a $55 fee applies)
- Discard service at $30 per item with a signed discard authorization
How to request shipping after storage
Ship-out requests are managed from the online account once items are in storage.
Steps to request shipping:
- Log into the Dorm Room Movers account.
- Open the “In Storage” or “From Storage” section to review inventory.
- On the main account page, in the FROM STORAGE area, click the green “Schedule a Ship Out (UPS)” button.
- Enter the destination ZIP code to generate a quick freight estimate.
Before continuing, a confirmation is required:
- Read the cost summary, which includes:
- Estimated UPS freight, plus
- $55 Warehouse Labor Fee, and
- $19.99 per-box Handling Fee
- Click the checkbox acknowledging the estimated freight and related fees.
The request cannot proceed unless this checkbox is selected. Once submitted, the warehouse team processes the order, prepares boxes, and charges the card on file before releasing the shipment to UPS.
